Fixed ladder weight capacity is the maximum load a permanently mounted steel ladder can carry safely — the climber, their tools, and the dynamic shock of the climb — without permanent bend or failure. Buyers ask it a dozen ways: how much weight can a fixed ladder hold, what is the rung load rating, where is the weight limit. The answer is one number with a method behind it.

What Fixed Ladder Load Capacity Means
Fixed ladder load capacity is a single concentrated force, stated in kilonewtons (kN), applied at the worst point on a rung. One worker of average mass plus tools sits near 1.1 kN. That is why the major standards cluster their rung minimums right around that figure.
Two numbers matter, and people confuse them. The rated load is the working capacity you design and buy to. The ultimate load is where the steel finally yields. Your fixed ladder load rating is the rated value — never the breaking point. The conversion helps when specs mix units: 1 kN is about 224.8 lbf, so the 250 lb OSHA rung load lands at roughly 1.11 kN.
Live Load vs Dead Load & Safety Factor
Two loads act on every fixed ladder, and the engineer sizes for both.
- Dead load — the permanent self-weight of the ladder, cage, and brackets. Constant and easy to predict.
- Live load — people, tools, and the dynamic shock of climbing or a fall arrest. Variable, and the figure the rung rating is built around.
The dynamic part is the catch. A static 1.1 kN climber can briefly impose much more through a stumble or a hard step. So the fixed ladder weight limit you publish is not the live load on its own — it is that load with a safety factor stacked on top.
Fixed steel ladder design typically targets a safety factor of at least 4 against ultimate load. A rung verified to a 1.5 kN working load is therefore engineered to survive well beyond that before it yields. In our workshop we apply a design safety factor and record it on the load-test report that ships with the order.
How Material & Construction Set the Limit
The rating is not abstract. Four build details decide where a fixed ladder maximum load actually sits.

- Material grade — Q235B mild steel for indoor and coated outdoor work; SS304 or SS316 where the site is coastal, washed down daily, or chemically aggressive. Higher grade, more reserve strength per rung.
- Rung diameter and pitch — standard rungs are 20–25 mm bar at 300 mm pitch. Thicker bar at tighter pitch raises the rung rating directly.
- Stile (stringer) wall thickness — the side rails carry climber and deflection together. Heavier stile sections lift the whole-ladder capacity, not just one rung.
- Coating — hot-dip galvanizing at 70–85 µm protects the section so the rated load holds over a 20-year service life rather than corroding away.

Governing Standards & Required Capacity
Three standards govern fixed ladder load rating across most export markets. Each sets a minimum rung load you must meet or beat.
- OSHA 1910.23 — each rung must hold a single concentrated load of at least 250 lb (about 1.11 kN), applied at its centre.
- EN ISO 14122-4 — rungs are designed and proof-tested to a 1.5 kN vertical point load, with stringers checked for the combined climber-and-deflection case.
- BS 4211 — the UK standard for permanent access ladders, with comparable rung and stile loading plus cage and rest-platform rules.

Our Factory Load Testing Process
A rating only means something once it is verified. Here is the sequence on our floor.

- Cut and weld a sample from the same Q235B or SS304 batch as the production run.
- Apply the rated point load to a single rung with a calibrated hydraulic ram. Hold it, then check for permanent set.
- Hot-dip galvanize to 70–85 µm, or powder coat over zinc, and log the coating thickness.
- Pull-test welds on a sample from every batch and record the result.
The output is a load-test report, a material certificate, and a weld report — the exact paperwork an inspector or a third party such as SGS, TÜV, or Bureau Veritas will ask to see. The factory holds ISO 9001:2015, and we have shipped verified ladders to 50+ countries since 2003.
What Capacity Do You Need?
One worker, light maintenance? A standard rung rating to OSHA 1910.23 or EN ISO 14122-4 covers it with room to spare.
Two climbers or heavy tooling? State the higher live load up front. We size rungs, stiles, brackets, and welds for it, rather than the single-person minimum. A warehouse fixed ladder in daily use is a different spec from a quarterly inspection climb.
Tight wall clearance or a confined shaft? A wall-mounted fixed ladder or a caged vertical fixed access ladder changes the bracket load path, which feeds back into the rating.
